Accessibility Statement

The Polynesian Kingdom of Atooi is working toward WCAG 2.2 Level AA accessibility. Selected pages and features have undergone keyboard and automated checks. A comprehensive conformance assessment and testing with screen readers have not yet been completed. Known limitations are described below.

What has been checked

The following checks were carried out on 18 September 2026 on a sample of pages. They describe what was tested, not the whole site.

• Keyboard use of the main menu, the search dialogue and the mobile menu was tested (opening, moving through items, closing with Escape, and keeping focus inside the mobile menu) and worked as intended.
• A “Skip to main content” link is present on every page. It was tested by keyboard on the home page only.
• Text and background colours were checked with an automated tool on eleven representative pages. The gold used for labels and body text on light backgrounds was darkened so that those pairs meet the WCAG contrast ratio. Other pages have not been individually measured.
• Heading order was checked on the sampled pages, including the Archives index, and runs in sequence there.
• On four pages checked at a phone-sized screen width of 390 pixels — the contact page, the archive access request page, the Our Mission page and the document reader — buttons and links measured at least 44 by 44 pixels. Other pages and other screen sizes were not measured.
• The photograph viewer was tested in one collection: it opens as a dialogue, presents its caption, closes with Escape and returns focus to the image that opened it.
• An error page titled “404 — Page Not Found” is shown when an address does not match a page.
• On 20 September 2026 the document reader was tested by keyboard on one document at screen widths of 1280 and 390 pixels. Tabbing reaches the page navigation, the page selector, Fit width, Fit page, both zoom controls and full-screen reading mode in that order, each with a visible focus indicator; Previous is skipped on the first page because it is disabled. Escape leaves full-screen reading mode and returns focus to the control that opened it. The page was checked for sideways scrolling at 390 pixels and had none. No screen-reader software was used.

Implemented but not yet verified with assistive technology

• The document reader announces the current page and its loading state through a live region. On 20 September 2026 that region was confirmed in a browser to be present and to update to “Page 2 of 2” when the page was changed. How it is spoken has not been confirmed with screen-reader software.
• Photographs, archival plates and the Royal Seal carry alternative text, and decorative duplicates are marked so they are not announced twice. This was checked by reviewing the code and with an automated tool, not page by page with a screen reader.

Known limitations

• No testing with screen readers or other assistive software has been completed, and most pages have not been individually assessed.
• The shared caption styles now place photograph captions on a solid dark band. Five representative archive cards were measured on 19 September 2026 at screen widths of 1280 and 390 pixels and gave contrast ratios between 11.6:1 and 14.3:1. The ten remaining faded caption and metadata placements in the photograph viewer — its collection label, plate title, plate counter, zoom level, the two tab labels, the field labels and field values, the “no further metadata” note and the keyboard-shortcut keys — were measured on 19 September 2026 and gave contrast ratios between 4.87:1 and 15.3:1, all above the 4.5:1 minimum. Eight of the ten were measured at both 1280 and 390 pixels; the plate title and the plate counter were measured at 1280 pixels only, the plate counter because it is not displayed at the narrow width. Other captions using the shared styles, and captions elsewhere on the site, have not been individually measured.
• Video material in the archive has no captions or transcripts. None is shown unless an approved transcription exists.
• Pages can be slow to become usable on slow connections. Work to reduce page weight continues.
• When an address does not match a page, the hosting service reports success before showing the error page. The error page is marked so that search engines do not index it; the underlying response cannot be changed from within the site.

How the site was checked

By keyboard, with automated contrast and heading tools, and with automated performance and accessibility audits of the home page, a record page and the document reader, on 18 September 2026. The detailed results are held in the Kingdom's internal audit record.
